68% of kids in Whatcom County don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables (source: WA State Healthy Youth Survey, 2023)
That’s why we’re on a mission to nourish the children of Whatcom County.
We go to where kids already are – in school! – and reconnect them with food, from the first step of planting a seed to the first bite shared with friends at the table. In the future we envision, every kid will grow up with the skills and experiences needed to cook meals that nourish their bodies, their communities, and the environment.
Our school-day program engages over 3,700 K-5 students in Whatcom County, and we tend to 24 school garden plots county-wide. We’re not just a one-off field trip–students work with us throughout the whole school year!
Fall and Spring
During the growing seasons, you’ll find students planting, watering, moving their bodies, investigating life sciences, and tasting fresh produce outside in their school gardens. Our garden lessons are directly aligned to Next Generation Science Standards, giving students the opportunity to make hands-on academic connections in a meaningful way.Â
Winter
When gardens are dormant, students cook nourishing recipes featuring the produce they grow on school grounds, learn about the nutrition benefits, and take “adventure bites!” By working together to make something delicious, students have the opportunity to practice social-emotional skills in a joyful setting.
